We've had a busy first week back! We celebrated a few birthdays at the beginning of the week, and have one more classmate whose birthday is on Sunday! One of our dear friend's last day at FM was Wednesday, and one of our part time friends will be joining our class daily for specials. The school also welcomed a new day time custodian. Academically, we eased in the first couple of days, but our class has also begun a few new units of learning.
What's new in January:
Math: We began our fourth unit of math, which involves decimals and continues fractions learning. This is going to feel like review for some, and will be challenging for others.
Reading: We eased back in this week, and had a lesson on book selection and sticking with books. (Don't be a book hopper!) Next week I will be offering book choices for book groups based on some of the current Maine Student Book Award book titles. DRAs will begin being administered next week.
Writing: We started our Round 2 of our opinion unit. Students will be taking a stance on whether they fell chocolate milk should be banned from schools, or if it should stay. We currently have some passionate opinions on both sides!
Science: Started a unit on cells. Children are working on making "Cell Cities" which involves relating a cell's organelle to a building in a city in order to better understand the job of each part of a cell. Students are using a variety of materials to create these cities and will have a small writing/oral component to receive a grade. Next, we will explore the concept of Mitosis.
NWEA: We had our Math NWEA on Friday, and Reading will be on Monday. The results from these tests will be included with your child's report card at the end of the month.
Cheers!
